# Pipe syntax

> BigQuery pipe query syntax supported in Firebolt's BigQuery compatibility mode.

BigQuery [pipe query syntax](https://docs.cloud.google.com/bigquery/docs/reference/standard-sql/pipe-syntax) chains operations with the `|>` operator, so a query reads top to bottom instead of inside out. In [BigQuery compatibility mode](/reference-sql/bigquery/overview), Firebolt translates a pipe query to the equivalent nested query.

FROM orders
|> WHERE amount > 100
|> AGGREGATE SUM(amount) AS total GROUP BY customer_id
|> ORDER BY total DESC
|> LIMIT 10
```

## Supported pipe operators

| Operator | Notes |
| :- | :- |
| `\|> WHERE` | Filters rows. |
| `\|> SELECT` | Projects columns and expressions. |
| `\|> EXTEND` | Appends computed columns to the current row. |
| `\|> DROP` | Removes named columns. |
| `\|> AGGREGATE ... GROUP BY` | Aggregations, including `GROUP AND ORDER BY` and per-item `ASC`/`DESC`. |
| `\|> ORDER BY` | Sorts rows. |
| `\|> LIMIT ... OFFSET` | Limits rows with an optional offset. |
| `\|> JOIN` | `INNER`, `LEFT`, `RIGHT`, `FULL`, and `CROSS` joins. |
| `\|> UNION` / `INTERSECT` / `EXCEPT` | Set operations with `ALL` or `DISTINCT`. `BY NAME` and `CORRESPONDING` apply to `UNION`. |

## Limitations

* `|> SET` and `|> RENAME` are not supported. Use `|> EXTEND` or `|> SELECT` to compute or rename columns.
* Other pipe operators from the BigQuery reference are not supported.
